Strategies for success: improving access to mental health care through mobile crisis response

Connections Health Solutions Jan 23, 2025

Recognizing the limitations of traditional facilities like jails and emergency departments for handling psychiatric emergencies, mobile crisis response teams are pioneering new ways to improve access to mental health care.

Proactive community-based interventions

Mobile crisis teams work closely with local law enforcement, 988 and community partners to address acute crises where they arise—whether at home or within the community. This approach ensures that individuals receive timely care, facilitating warm handoffs to appropriate treatment and reducing the need for hospital admissions. It not only improves outcomes but also strengthens community-level access to mental health support while giving individuals a choice in how they receive support.

Embedding services in safe spaces

A key strategy for improving access involves collaboration between organizations to offer essential services in safe, supportive environments. By building partnerships which allow mental health resources to respond to locations like shelters and establishing direct dispatch protocols with local organizations—such as 988 and other community crisis resources—access to care can be significantly improved, ensuring individuals are quickly connected to the right services. This approach reduces the reliance on law enforcement and fosters a more compassionate, efficient response for those in need.

Comprehensive support from mobile teams

Mobile crisis teams, comprised of licensed therapists and responders, offer immediate support, therapeutic interventions, and connections to long-term resources. This model expands access to mental health care, builds trust within the community, encourages individuals to seek help without fear of stigma, and allows the individual to decide when they are experiencing a crisis which needs intervention. The flexibility of these teams allows them to address the unique needs of various communities, demonstrating a comprehensive and personalized approach.

As mobile crisis teams continue to evolve, investing in these responsive and accessible models is crucial. In the absence of traditional crisis centers, or in tandem with them, these teams play an essential role in ensuring equitable access to care and fostering a more humane mental health system. By embracing innovative partnerships and prioritizing access at every level, we can pave the way for a more responsive and effective mental health care landscape.
