New SAMHSA Guidelines will Benefit Youth in Crisis

Connections Health Solutions Feb 29, 2024

In the United States, the increasing demand for behavioral healthcare among youth is met with challenges, leading to unnecessary hospital visits and prolonged stays in inpatient facilities. Limited community resources often result in disproportionate school discipline or justice system involvement for youth with behavioral health needs. SAMHSA created behavioral health crisis care guidelines to improve outcomes for youth and their families.

Framework for youth crisis systems

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently unveiled the National Guidelines for Child and Youth Behavioral Health Crisis Care, offering a comprehensive framework of best practices for youth crisis response programs. These guidelines advocate for the least restrictive level of care, making it easier for youth and families to access crisis services tailored to their specific needs. SAMHSA’s guidelines include 3 key components for crisis services that support children and their families.

  1. Someone to talk to: Crisis call centers provide support and resources to individuals in need- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  1. Someone to respond: Mobile response teams composed of mental health professionals and crisis intervention experts designed to provide immediate support.
  1. Safe place: Services for youth and their families. Family engagement emerges as a crucial element for success, fostering sustainable change within the home environment.

The progression of the youth behavioral health crisis care continuum is ongoing, and the SAMHSA guidelines offer guidance as we persist in recognizing the needs and resources essential for the future of this continuum.
