The team behind crisis response at Connections: a multidisciplinary approach

Connections Health Solutions Feb 12, 2025

Effective crisis care relies on a coordinated, multidisciplinary team where professionals with diverse expertise work in unison to address each person’s unique needs. At Connections, this team comprises the following key roles:

Behavioral Health Specialists (BHS): Engage individuals in crisis with a focus on ensuring their emotional and physical safety. From the moment they arrive, the BHS team members provide ongoing support, using their skills to de-escalate and guide individuals toward stabilization.

Peers or Recovery Support Specialists (RSS): Individuals with lived experience who provide invaluable support. By sharing their own stories of recovery and using motivational interviewing, RSS team members foster trust, connection, and hope—critical elements in supporting individuals through their crisis.

Registered Nurses (RN): Conduct clinical nursing assessments, closely monitor the medical status of individuals, and address any urgent health needs. Their role is crucial in identifying and managing both physical and emotional health concerns during a crisis.

Crisis Workers (Case Managers, Care Coordinators): Conduct comprehensive assessments, gather vital information, and coordinate discharge planning. By connecting individuals to post-crisis services and long-term recovery resources, they help ensure continued care and prevent future crises.

Providers (MDs, NPs, PAs): Perform psychiatric evaluations, provide diagnoses, and develop tailored treatment plans. They work closely with other team members to ensure the stabilization of individuals, offering expert guidance on medications and therapeutic interventions.

Support staff: Play an essential role in maintaining smooth facility operations, from administrative support to logistics. Their work ensures that clinical teams can focus fully on patient care without disruption.

Each team member contributes their own skills and knowledge to provide compassionate, immediate, and effective care to individuals in crisis.

Shared goal: stabilization and support

The shared goal of every team member at Connections is to stabilize individuals and guide them toward lasting recovery. Through a unified approach, team members collaborate closely to ensure that each person receives integrated, compassionate care from the first point of contact to discharge planning. By delivering timely interventions, fostering collaboration, and prioritizing patient-centered care, the team ensures that individuals receive the right care at the right time—leading to better outcomes and long-term stability.

Crisis stabilization units (CSU) provide inpatient-level care for individuals requiring secure, intensive monitoring beyond the 23-hour crisis observation period. Like inpatient units, CSUs feature 24/7 nursing, daily contact with psychiatrists, and an average three-to-five day stay. Having an on-site CSU ensures continuity of care, avoids treatment delays and duplicative efforts, and prevents individuals from being stuck in observation units due to inpatient bed availability.

23-hour crisis observation units aim to quickly assess needs, initiate treatment, and plan for discharge to ensure ongoing stabilization in the least restrictive setting. An interdisciplinary team uses various interventions—such as medications, peer support, family involvement, and care coordination—to address crises and resolve psychosocial barriers.

  • In the United States, a community's response to a behavioral health crisis is often fragmented, inefficient, and inaccessible to those who need it most. In most communities, few treatment options are designed for and capable of safely managing the care of individuals in crisis. Additionally, the capacity of behavioral health services, both inpatient and outpatient, has struggled to keep up with rising patient volumes and requests for services. This challenge has been made worse by workforce shortages across the industry.
